Prius Battery FAQ

Straight answers. No runaround.

How do I know if my Prius hybrid battery is bad?
The clearest signs: red triangle of death on the dashboard, MPG dropping well below normal (under 35 mpg), battery bars jumping from full to empty rapidly, gas engine running nonstop even at low speeds, and sluggish acceleration. If you're seeing any of these, one or more battery modules are likely weak or dead.
How much does Prius battery replacement cost?
Toyota dealers charge $3,000-$4,500+ for a full pack replacement. At our shop, it depends on what you actually need. If only a few modules are bad, a cell-level repair costs significantly less than a full replacement. We test all 28 modules, show you the results, and give you exact pricing for every option before any work starts. Our labor rate is $135/hr vs $175+ at Toyota.
Can you repair my Prius battery instead of replacing the whole thing?
Often, yes. The Prius battery pack has 28 individual modules. If 3-5 modules are weak, we replace just those and balance the pack. This is significantly cheaper than a full replacement and Toyota dealers won't even offer this — they only sell complete packs. We test each module individually to find the weak ones.
How long does Prius battery repair take?
Module-level repair: usually same day. Full pack replacement: 2-4 hours. The Prius battery is one of the more accessible hybrid batteries — located behind the rear seat. We'll give you the exact timeline after diagnosis.
Which Prius models do you work on?
All of them. Gen 2 (2004-2009), Gen 3 (2010-2015), Gen 4 (2016-2022), Prius C, Prius V, and Prius Prime plug-in models. Different generations have slightly different battery configurations, but the diagnostic and repair process is the same.
Should I clean my Prius battery fan?
Yes — the battery cooling fan pulls air through the cabin to cool the pack. Pet hair, dust, and debris clog it over time. A clogged fan causes the battery to overheat, which kills cells faster. If you've never had it cleaned, it's probably contributing to your battery problems. We clean and inspect it as part of every battery service.
